Russell, Tad - Resident Science Expert

Hello My Name Is...

Tad Russell

Tad Russell

I am Tad Russell, one of the Science Resident Experts at Howard Connect Academy. This will be my 5th year teaching 6th Grade in Hamilton County. Before I was a teacher, I was a field scientist for an environmental testing laboratory. My undergraduate degree is in hydrology and soil science. Since becoming a teacher, I have passionate about building classroom culture that is respectful of others and challenges student thinking.

I first fell in love with science when I was in elementary school. My mom was an English teacher and I would have to spend afternoons at her school. She would send me to the chemistry teacher’s room to look at the experiment they did that day. One day, he held up two identical balloons and let them float to the ceiling. Next he took a candle on the end of a pipe and let me touch the flame to one balloon and it popped. When I touched the flame to next balloon, it erupted in a ball of fire! The time I spent in that lab instilled a desire to experience science rather than just read about it.

I look forward to being apart of the team at Howard Connect Academy. Working with the other experts will create interdisciplinary studies that remove the question, “When will I use this?” I have seen student take pride in creating projects that demonstrate their understanding of a
subject rather than just taking a test or writing a paper. In my previous profession, we called sampling event “muddy boot hydrology.” I believe students should have the opportunity to dive into a subject and get their shoes dirty as they wade around and discover meaning.
